Club History
The Ladies club was formed in 1995 thanks to the initiative of Valerie Collins and Siobhan Mc Carthy. In this first year the enthusiasm for the club was palpable and even though most of the players were beginners their determination and the involvement of Ger Barry and Seamus Collins saw a rapid improvement in the skills of the players. The following year marked a pivotal moment in time for the club, the establishment of a Juvenile section spurred on by Tim O Connor, who worked tirelessly to promote Ladies Football and gain the interest of the children of the community. This year also saw the club win its first pieces of silverware, The Gold Watch tournament V’s Watergrasshill and the East Cork Under 14 Championship V’s Inch. From this year on the club has seen many successes especially in the East Cork Divsion with many underage and Junior titles won in this section. The Club also has two County Titles under its belt, Under 16 county Championship 2002 trained and managed by Seamus Collins, Christine Garde and Kathleen Buckley and the 12-aside junior County League 2008 trained and managed by Ger Barry and Denis O Mahoney. The Club also participates in competitions such as The All-Ireland 7’s in Dublin, Cailin Og, Feile and County and Divisional Blitz. Also it has to be mentioned that many of the members of the club also play with the Scoil Chlochair Mhuire Football team in the Sciath na Scoil competition and with the St. Aloysius football team in the Secondary school competitions.
The Club has progressed significantly since 1995 and this wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and involvement from club officers, managers and trainers. This commitment is evident from the reality that a number of players from the 1995 team are now heavily involved in the committee of the club and are also still active playing members!! For instance Liz Aherne who was development officer and PRO for the club for several years and also involved in the County Board and also Mary Barry Roche who is the current secretary for the club 2009. Tim O Connor, Arthur O Leary and Christine Garde also have to be commended for all the work and dedication they have given the club, the divisional board and county board down through the years.
Officers, Managers and Trainers that have devoted their time, knowledge and skills down through the years: Frank Savage, Paul and Fiona Keegan, Seamus Collins, Tim O Connor, Adrian Kidney, Paul Mc Carthy, Anthony Cashman, Kathleen Buckley, Christine Garde, Arthur O Leary, Padraig Foley, Liz Aherne, Margaret Beausang, Ger Barry, Denis O Mahoney, Ann O Mahoney, Catherine Garde, Tim O Sullivan, Mary Barry Roche, Olivia Buttimer, Trish Dunsford and Anthony Barry.
The development and success of the club would not have been possible without the involvement of supporters and one very special supporter the late Billy Power. As well as being an avid supporter he was also very involved in sourcing sponsorship for the club in the early years and was always present for the church gate collections. There wasn’t a match that Billy missed and his voice could always be heard from the sideline.
The Club has many talented and dedicated members and is proud to have produced county and divisional players. Also it is an achievement in itself that most of the current members of the Junior Teams have been playing for the club since an underage level. The Club is nothing without the enthusiasm of its members so hopefully the commitment and spirit of the girls will be continued for the next 14 years by current members and future members.
